Nestlé Purina Modernizes MarTech Ecosystem to Turn Millions of Fragmented Data Points into Real-Time Pet Parent Conversations
Time to read:
Challenge
Nestlé Purina balances over a century of brand tradition with a highly complex digital reality, managing more than 20 legacy pet care brands. In a unique retail category where a pet parent's choice directly correlates to immediate pet happiness and long-term customer loyalty, capturing real-time engagement is paramount. However, Purina’s customer data lived across more than 10 disconnected legacy databases and siloed system segments.
The organization routinely captured over 22 million weekly digital events, but the technical landscape made it impossible to stitch these behaviors together into a singular profile in real time. Marketing and engineering teams operated under a rigid, slow-moving "campaign mindset" rather than a real-time conversational approach, resulting in delayed communications and lost opportunities to connect during critical pet lifecycles.
Solution
To build a fully interconnected, trusted view of the modern pet parent, Purina launched a multi phased enterprise martech modernization strategy using Twilio Segment as its central orchestration layer. By treating customer identity and data governance as a centralized spine rather than siloed app-level tasks, Purina implemented a controlled ingestion model to ingest, clean, and resolve user data from diverse web, app, and third-party vendor sources.
Even when major operational shifts occurred—such as migrating to a new identity provider or swapping out app rewards transcript vendors—Purina utilized Segment's flexible transformation pipelines to maintain a clean, standardized data model. Today, real-time event tracking instantly triggers hyper-personalized interactions through downstream automation platforms, ensuring Purina delivers targeted experiences exactly when pet owners need them most.
Turning Fragmented Customer Data into Lifelong Customer Loyalty
For a century, Nestlé Purina has provided world-class food, treats, litter, and supplements to ensure pets live happy, healthy lives. Yet, in the modern CPG landscape, maintaining a leadership position across dozens of legacy brands requires more than stellar products—it requires showing up for pet parents at the exact moments that matter.
"As pet owners ourselves, we know that every moment matters. At Purina, our goal is simple— to show up in those moments in a way that makes them special," says Amelia Williams, MarTech Architect at Purina. "But doing that at scale—in real time—is a lot harder than it sounds."
Historically, Purina was sitting on an immense wealth of data generated by separate components: data warehouses, analytics setups, and email platforms. Each distinct channel generated independent user signals, yet very few operated cohesively due to clashing data models and fractured customer identifiers. Because data could not be mobilized instantly, the brand fell back on pre-scheduled, siloed campaigns built on fixed timelines.
Recognizing that pet needs do not wait for campaign schedules, Purina's data enablement team transitioned from broad campaigns to continuous, responsive conversations. They set out to modernize an active enterprise ecosystem without pausing ongoing business delivery.
Establishing a Flexible Identity Spine Amid Constant System Pivots
The team's foundational task centered on identity resolution. If an organization cannot accurately recognize a user across separate touchpoints, downstream personalization efforts inevitably fail.
This technical resilience was put to the test when the business shifted to a new external identity provider to manage user registrations and logins across its web and mobile applications. While the shift was strategically sound, the provider's out-of-the-box flow data did not structurally align
with Purina's established data model, threatening to break visibility into our high volume of weekly platform logins.
Rather than forcing complex, downstream databases to parse the fragmented login streams, Purina used Twilio Segment as a controlled ingestion layer. The architecture team piped the raw stream into Segment and applied custom business logic to sanitize, transform, and normalize the data into uniform profile traits. This allowed Purina to flawlessly map cross-platform login behaviors, turning raw authentications into actionable behavioral traits while maintaining strict data governance.
Cleaning Inconsistent Third-Party Data for Instant Personalization
With a centralized identity engine in place, Purina focused on utilizing high-value mobile touchpoints. Through the myPurina mobile application, pet owners earn ecosystem rewards by capturing photos of physical purchase receipts—a process that yields hundreds of thousands of highly informative transactional events every single week. These receipt profiles inform Purina exactly what a consumer bought, when they bought it, and where they stand in their pet’s development lifecycle (e.g., transitioning from puppy to adult food).
Midway through deployment, Purina encountered an unexpected obstacle: they had to abruptly switch out their underlying receipt transcription vendor. The incoming raw data streams from the new vendor arrived unstructured and un-normalized; identical product SKUs and retail brands were formatted in wildly conflicting variations, but the team needed to accept all receipts, regardless of formatting.
To keep this data from corrupting downstream personalization engines, Purina built an automated cleansing pipeline right inside the data flow using Segment. The pipeline programmatically maps and normalizes receipt attributes in transit. The result is structured, activation-ready customer data delivered straight to their personalization tool for real-time mobile push engagement, and directly to the core consumer 360 data warehouse for executive Power BI reporting.
Migrating a Legacy Offers Engine in Weeks, Not Months
The final phase of Purina's journey involved deploying a real-time event-driven orchestration layer. In the latter half of 2025, the organization faced an aggressive corporate mandate: replace their legacy offers engine before its fast-approaching Q4 deprecation deadline. What was originally slotted as a comprehensive 2026 initiative suddenly had to be architected, tested, and fully launched in less than a month to prevent a critical disruption to year-end coupon activations.
Purina utilized Segment's real-time orchestration capabilities to build a dynamic offer generation pipeline connected directly to a new coupon vendor. When a pet parent performs a specific qualifying digital event, Segment calculates campaign eligibility in the moment, calls external microservices via Functions, and triggers an individualized reward offer to an in-app iFrame instantly.
Backed by integrated observability to ensure 100% coupon delivery accuracy, the team fully migrated and stood up the modern offer engine in just two weeks.
Cross-Functional Value Realized
By building its core martech infrastructure while simultaneously supporting ongoing campaign requirements, Purina eliminated technical silos across multiple internal domains:
● Marketing & Engagement Teams: Gained the power to independently segment and target pet owners in near real time. Audience generation workflows that once took a grueling two weeks of manual query logic & testing now take less than an hour.
● MarTech Architects & Engineers: Eradicated the friction of building custom integrations for every new vendor pivot. Centralizing identity and event pipelines reduced campaign deployment setup times by 99%.
● Data & Analytics Teams: Created a single source of truth. Cleansed, governed event streams flow straight to the global cloud data warehouse, empowering analysts with accurate Power BI dashboards.
